Carrying out the search online

The instruction in searching that follows is generally applicable to all databases and host services.

However, software commands are still host specific and databases remain un-standardized in their structure and layout. While there has been partial adoption of similar codes by different hosts following the introduction of the Common Command Language, enabling you to switch more easily from one host to another, and a corresponding simplification in the number of codes used within a database, the diversity remains. Detailed descriptions of any one host service’s commands have NOT been included within the body of the text.

Being able to distinguish what a search command looks like in general and ascertain its function, is nonetheless essential for both the thorough understanding of this general guidance section, subsequent demonstrations and for participation in the exercises. You should therefore familiarize yourself with some basic commands from STN and record formats - Tutorial form CAS. (CAS has also produced other tutorials).

Key in your search terms with the appropriate commands from STN. A typical search consisting of a select command statement and system response of numbers of records retrieved, might look like this:

	=> S DISTRICT AND HEATING
		536  DISTRICT
		814  HEATING
	L1	 28   DISTRICT AND HEATING
