Exercise 1:

A list of keywords that can describe our topic:

• energy,energy production,
• energy plant,
• energetic,
• Lithuania,
• environment

Keywords energy, energy production, energy plant and energetic are related. Energy production and energy generation are synonymous. Lithuania is in Baltic region, therefore last one could be as one of possible keyword.

Environment and ecology are not synonymous, meaning is different, but in our case we call them related.

Fortunately, all our keywords are not used in plural, except keyword energy plant. In searching for information it is useful to use both singular and plural.

Exercise 2:

We have chose the following resources: encyclopedias, textbooks, research reviews.

In our library we have found dictionaries, encyclopedias, textbooks in area physics:

3 titles in Lithuanian language;

61 - in Russian language;

18 - in other western languages.
 

2 periodicals in Lithuanian language;

48 periodicals in Russian language;

40 periodicals in other western languages.

Exercise 3:

We started to search for items of primary sources in local library and Lithuanian union catalogues:

• Searching for information starting from 1994 in our library : catalogue according UDC index "620.9*" we have found 38 hits, : according "502.7*" - 87 hits, combining both - 1 hit.

Searching for information in Union Catalogue of Lithuania: catalogue according UDC index "620.9*" we have found 104 hits, according "502.7*" - 84 hits.

The relevance of the references we have found is following:

Exercise 4:

Search information in database INSPEC on CD-ROM (1993-1997).

Our first search have been following:

We tried to search in CD- ROM INSPEC according significant words in the title:

- energy production,

- environmental,

- Lithuania,

- energy.

According title words: "energy production" we have found the only theoretical and mathematical record, according "energy" - 2085 records. Next step we defined more exactly - "energy" and "environmental" - 5 records. According to basic terms: "energy resources" we found 8 records, "environmental" -876 records, "environmental and energy" -152 records, "environmental safety" - 2 records. Using basic index "power station" - result 38 records, "Lithuania" - 3 records.

After our tutorial’s suggestions we made few changes in formulation of search.

We formulated our search in this way:

1. “energy and environment*” - 214 hits.

2. “baltic or lithuania or ignalina” - 207 hits.

combining 1 and 2 - 3 hits.

Last 3 hits are fairly relevant:

Using search engine “AltaVista” we used keywords in Lithuanian:

We formulated our search in this way:

"energy production" and environment* and baltic, result is 12 hits.

Exercise 7:

We curried out searching using meta engine Metacrawler:

We formulated our search in this way: energy + production environment* Lithuania. We found 42 hits.

Our topic is very specific, therefore we made decision to search for information in Lithuanian language. We formulated keywords in Lithuanian because of majority researches working in this subject are Lithuanians. Up to now main part of scientific publication are published in lithuanian journals, textbooks and monographs.

Searching according to “elektros+energijos+gamyba” we have found 63 hits.

Our first search have been following:

We tried to search according significant words in the title:

• energy - 181 hits
• energy and environment - 50 hits.
• energy and environment and lithuania - 2 hits.
• energy and lithuania - 17 hits.

All founded titles have been published in newspapers and magazines.
